A visitor at the opening of the '1/28. Migration Routes' exhibition at the Forum Anja Niedringhaus in Hoexter, Germany, 28 March 2026. The exhibition compiles pictures of migrants' perilous journeys, captioned by 28 EPA photographers, with a focus on the major irregular migration routes across the Mediterranean, through Central America, and within Southeast Asia. Anja Niedringhaus began her journey to becoming an award-winning photographer in 1990 at the EPA as its first female staff photographer; among other things, she documented the war in the former Yugoslavia for the EPA and had her first assignment in Afghanistan.
